Custom Stairs, Railings, Baseboards & Trim in Maryland, DC, and Virginia
Custom wood stairs, railings, balusters, newel posts, baseboards, and trim millwork installed across Maryland, DC, and Virginia.
Custom Stair, Railing & Trim Carpentry for DMV Homes
Floors are only part of a finished home. The staircase, the railing you put your hand on every day, the baseboards that frame each room, and the trim around your doors and windows are what make a space feel complete and custom. 2020 Flooring brings the same craftsmanship from our hardwood flooring work to custom stairs, railings, and millwork throughout Maryland, Washington DC, and Northern Virginia.
Because we handle flooring and finish carpentry together, every piece matches: stair treads in the same species as your floor, baseboards with the right reveal, and railings stained to tie it all together. From a single handrail replacement to a full custom staircase and whole-home trim package, call (301) 881-1115 or request a free estimate online.

What We Build & Install
Custom Hardwood Stairs
A staircase is the single most-used and most-seen piece of carpentry in a home, and it deserves more than builder-grade pine. We fabricate and install solid hardwood stair treads and risers in oak, maple, walnut, hickory, and more — matched to your flooring so the staircase reads as a continuous part of the home rather than an afterthought. Whether you are converting carpeted stairs to hardwood, replacing worn treads, or building a new staircase from scratch, we handle the full scope.
We also build feature stairs: open-riser and floating designs, curved and winding stairs, mitered returns, and custom stringer details. Every tread is scribed for a tight fit, glued and fastened to eliminate squeaks, and finished to a durable, foot-traffic-rated sheen.
Custom Railings, Handrails & Balusters
The railing system sets the character of a staircase. We design and install custom wood railings and handrails, paired with wood balusters or wrought-iron spindles, in styles that range from traditional colonial to clean contemporary. Handrails are profiled, joined, and returned to the wall to meet code, and every component is sanded and finished for a piece that is as comfortable in the hand as it is to look at.
We also fabricate and set newel posts and volutes — the anchor of any railing — using box newels, turned posts, and over-the-post systems. From a single handrail replacement to a full balustrade for a grand staircase, the joinery is tight and built to last.
Baseboards, Casing & Crown Molding
Trim is what makes a room feel finished. We install baseboards, door and window casing, crown molding, chair rail, wainscoting, and panel molding in primed MDF for paint or in solid hardwood stained to match your floors. Clean miters, tight scarf joints, and caulk-free reveals are the details that separate professional trim carpentry from a quick caulk-and-go.
Trim and stairs are usually the finishing touch on a flooring project, which is why we keep it all under one roof — the baseboards meet your new floor with the right reveal and the stained millwork matches the stairs and railings exactly.
Stair & Railing Refinishing
Not every project is new construction. We refinish existing staircases and railings — stripping old finish, repairing or replacing damaged treads and balusters, and re-staining to refresh or completely change the color. Re-staining oak handrails and newel posts from a dated orange tone to a modern matte espresso or natural white-oak look is one of the highest-impact updates in a home.

Why Flooring and Finish Carpentry Belong Together
When the floor is installed by one crew and the stairs and trim by another, the seams show — mismatched stain, inconsistent reveals at the baseboard, a handrail in a different tone than the treads. Keeping it all with 2020 Flooring means one team controls the species, the stain, and the details from the floor up through the railing and crown.
It is also more efficient: trim and stairs are the natural last step of a flooring project, so we sequence the work so your new floors, stairs, baseboards, and trim all come together on one schedule. Pair it with new hardwood floor installation or refinishing for a fully cohesive result.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you match new stairs and trim to my existing hardwood floors?
Yes. Matching is one of the main reasons to keep flooring, stairs, and trim with one contractor. We select the same species and stain your stair treads, railings, baseboards, and casing on-site to match your existing or new hardwood floors, so the millwork reads as a seamless part of the home rather than a separate add-on.
How much does it cost to install custom stairs and railings?
Cost depends on scope. Converting a carpeted staircase to stained hardwood treads and risers typically runs a few thousand dollars per staircase; a full custom railing system with newel posts and iron balusters adds to that based on the number of balusters, the railing profile, and the layout. Baseboard and trim is usually priced per linear foot. Because every staircase and home is different, the only accurate number comes from an on-site measurement — which we provide free.
Do you replace wood balusters with wrought-iron spindles?
Yes — swapping dated wood balusters for wrought-iron spindles is one of our most requested updates. We remove the existing balusters, prepare the rail and tread holes, and install iron spindles in your chosen pattern, securing each one so the railing is solid and code-compliant. It dramatically modernizes a staircase without rebuilding it.
Do your railings meet code?
Yes. We install handrails and guardrails to current building-code requirements for height, graspability, baluster spacing (the 4-inch sphere rule), and return-to-wall terminations. Code-compliant railings are both a safety and a resale consideration, and we build to those standards on every project.
Which areas do you serve for stair, railing, and trim work?
We provide custom stair, railing, baseboard, and trim carpentry throughout the DMV — including Bethesda, Rockville, Potomac, Silver Spring, and the rest of Montgomery County, Washington DC, and Northern Virginia communities like Arlington, McLean, and Alexandria. Our showroom is in North Bethesda, MD.

5.0on Google“We had a last minute major issue in the flooring we selected from another flooring installer on our kitchen renovation and addition. We had initially loved another flooring choice that we saw at 2020 Flooring. Unfortunately we found out it had been discontinued. Carol from 2020 Flooring went above and beyond to help us locate the amount of LVP flooring we needed by scouring the country. She found just the right amount and was able to get the order expedited so we could continue on the time schedule with our general contractor. Bobby from 2020 Flooring was great in helping us remedy an issue with the subfloor. We now have the exact flooring we wanted which has made our new kitchen and addition complete. Can't thank them enough!”
“As an architect, from the moment we walked into 2020 Flooring, upon seeing a standout recommendation on NextDoor, I was immediately impressed with Bobby and Carol's technical expertise, friendliness and professionalism. They asked the right questions, took their time to weigh flooring options for us without pressure and worked hard to meet our budget for new floors for our townhome. They committed to a date for installation and made it work. Their crew, led by Mariano, was highly competent, discrete, meticulous and worked long hours to complete the job in time. They stand by their work proudly and their warranty is better than anyone else's. Our new floors are fabulous and we wholeheartedly recommend 2020 Flooring!”
“I spent many hours trying to select a quality vinyl floor with the right color combination for my house and Carol at IDESIGN made the job easy with a great selection that I am very satisfied with. In general IDESIGN carries a good selection of quality floors but the added value of Carol's design expertise made the difference and I greatly benefited from her help. Thanks Carol😊”
