Parquet Patterns We Install

Herringbone

Rectangular blocks laid at 90° to one another for a classic V-shaped zigzag — the most requested parquet pattern today and a hallmark of French and English manor houses.

Chevron

Planks cut at an angle so their ends meet in a continuous point, creating a cleaner, more graphic arrow than herringbone. Modern, directional, and unmistakably high-end.

Basket-Weave

Groups of parallel slats rotated 90° between blocks for a woven, checkerboard effect — the look of the classic 12×12 parquet tile, equally at home in traditional and contemporary rooms.

Versailles

Interlocking squares set within a border frame, the pattern first laid at the Palace of Versailles in 1684. A formal, symmetrical statement floor for entryways and grand rooms.

Solid vs. Engineered Parquet

Parquet is made from the same hardwood species as standard strip and plank flooring — white and red oak, walnut, maple, and cherry — built in two constructions. Solid parquet is milled from a single piece of hardwood and can be refinished many times, but it belongs above grade over a sound wood subfloor. Engineered parquet bonds a real hardwood veneer to a cross-ply core, dramatically reducing seasonal movement so it can be installed over concrete slabs, in basements, and over radiant heat.

In the DMV, where humidity swings from dry winters to humid summers, that choice matters. We assess your subfloor, room conditions, and long-term goals and recommend the construction that will perform — and we acclimate every parquet floor to your home for 48 to 72 hours before installation to prevent gapping and cupping. For a deeper comparison, see our complete guide to parquet flooring.

How We Install Parquet

Subfloor Prep & Leveling

Parquet is unforgiving of an uneven subfloor. We flatten to within 3/16" over 10 feet and moisture-test slabs so tiles never rock, crack, or lift.

Acclimation

Every parquet floor acclimates to your home for 48–72 hours before installation — essential in the DMV climate to prevent post-install gapping and cupping.

Precise Pattern Layout

Herringbone and chevron require exact angled cuts and a dead-straight working line. We dry-lay and balance the pattern so it stays true across the entire room.

On-Site Finishing

For unfinished parquet we sand multi-directionally to handle the changing grain, then seal with your choice of matte, satin, or oil finish for a seamless surface.

How Much Does Parquet Flooring Cost?

Parquet is a premium product, and its cost reflects material quality, pattern complexity, and skilled labor. Installed, most parquet floors in Maryland, DC, and North Bethesda run between $12 and $25+ per square foot. Engineered parquet materials start around $4 to $7 per square foot and solid hardwood parquet runs $6 to $15+, while herringbone and chevron layouts add $3 to $6 per square foot in labor over a standard basket-weave tile.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does parquet flooring installation cost in the DMV?

A quality parquet floor in Maryland, DC, and Northern Virginia typically runs $12 to $25+ per square foot installed. Engineered parquet materials start around $4 to $7 per square foot and solid hardwood parquet runs $6 to $15+, while installation adds $4 to $10 for standard tile patterns. Herringbone and chevron add $3 to $6 per square foot in labor because of the angled cuts and precise alignment required. The only way to get an accurate number is a free in-home measurement.

What is the difference between solid and engineered parquet?

Solid parquet is milled from a single piece of hardwood and can be refinished several times, but it should only go over wood subfloors above grade. Engineered parquet has a real hardwood veneer over a cross-ply core, which resists moisture and makes it suitable for concrete slabs, basements, and radiant heat. We assess your subfloor and room conditions and recommend the right construction for your space.

Can parquet be installed over concrete or radiant heat?

Yes — with engineered parquet. Engineered construction can be glued directly to a properly prepared, moisture-tested concrete slab and is the right choice over hydronic or electric radiant heat. Solid parquet should not be installed over concrete or radiant heat because of the risk of warping, gapping, and excessive drying.

Is parquet flooring still in style?

Very much so. While the dark, heavily lacquered parquet of the 1970s developed a dated reputation, modern parquet — especially white oak herringbone and chevron in matte or oil finishes — is one of the most sought-after looks in interior design today. It is one of the most requested patterns at our Rockville showroom among homeowners across Maryland, DC, and North Bethesda.

How long does a parquet installation take?

Most residential parquet installations take three to seven days depending on square footage, pattern complexity, and whether the floor is finished on-site. Herringbone and chevron layouts take longer than basket-weave tiles because of the angled cuts. Parquet also needs to acclimate to your home for 48 to 72 hours before installation, which we build into every project schedule.

Can parquet flooring be refinished?

Yes. Solid parquet can be sanded and refinished several times over its life. Engineered parquet with a 3mm or thicker wear layer can usually be refinished once or twice. Refinishing parquet requires multi-directional sanding to account for the changing grain direction of the pattern, so it is best left to professionals — exactly the kind of work our team handles across the DMV.

We had a last minute major issue in the flooring we selected from another flooring installer on our kitchen renovation and addition. We had initially loved another flooring choice that we saw at 2020 Flooring. Unfortunately we found out it had been discontinued. Carol from 2020 Flooring went above and beyond to help us locate the amount of LVP flooring we needed by scouring the country. She found just the right amount and was able to get the order expedited so we could continue on the time schedule with our general contractor. Bobby from 2020 Flooring was great in helping us remedy an issue with the subfloor. We now have the exact flooring we wanted which has made our new kitchen and addition complete. Can't thank them enough!

As an architect, from the moment we walked into 2020 Flooring, upon seeing a standout recommendation on NextDoor, I was immediately impressed with Bobby and Carol's technical expertise, friendliness and professionalism. They asked the right questions, took their time to weigh flooring options for us without pressure and worked hard to meet our budget for new floors for our townhome. They committed to a date for installation and made it work. Their crew, led by Mariano, was highly competent, discrete, meticulous and worked long hours to complete the job in time. They stand by their work proudly and their warranty is better than anyone else's. Our new floors are fabulous and we wholeheartedly recommend 2020 Flooring!

I spent many hours trying to select a quality vinyl floor with the right color combination for my house and Carol at IDESIGN made the job easy with a great selection that I am very satisfied with. In general IDESIGN carries a good selection of quality floors but the added value of Carol's design expertise made the difference and I greatly benefited from her help. Thanks Carol😊
