What Affects Luxury Vinyl Pricing?

Wear Layer Thickness

Measured in mils. Residential use: 12-20 mil. Commercial / high-traffic: 20-28 mil. Thicker wear layer = higher cost and longer warranty coverage.

Plank Width & Length

Wide-format planks (7"+ wide, 48"+ long) command a premium but create a more realistic wood look with fewer seams.

Core Type

WPC (Wood Plastic Composite) and SPC (Stone Plastic Composite) cores add rigidity and underfoot comfort but cost more than basic LVT.

Luxury Vinyl Cost FAQs

How much does luxury vinyl plank flooring cost installed per square foot in 2026?

In the DMV, luxury vinyl plank typically costs $5.50-$8.50 per square foot installed in 2026 — roughly $2-$5 per square foot for mid-tier materials and $2.50-$4.50 for professional installation labor, plus underlayment and trim. Premium wide-plank and commercial-grade products with 20+ mil wear layers run $9-$12+ installed. Use the calculator above to estimate your specific room and brand tier.

How much is the labor cost to install vinyl plank flooring?

Installation labor for vinyl plank flooring typically runs $2.50-$4.50 per square foot in the Maryland, DC, and Northern Virginia market. Labor climbs toward the top of that range for glue-down installations, rooms needing subfloor leveling or old-floor removal, stairs, and layouts with many cuts (islands, angled walls, lots of doorways). Click-lock floating installs over a clean, flat subfloor sit at the low end.

Does this calculator work for LVT (luxury vinyl tile) too?

Yes. LVP (plank) and LVT (tile) are the same material category in different shapes, and they price nearly identically — the calculator covers both. LVT in tile formats sometimes adds slightly more waste for pattern layouts (grouted looks, checkerboard), so order 10% overage instead of 5-10%.

What makes luxury vinyl installation cost more than the materials suggest?

The three biggest additions to a quote beyond materials: subfloor preparation (leveling compound, moisture mitigation on slabs, or plywood repair), removal and disposal of the existing floor, and trim work (quarter round, transitions, stair nosing). Furniture moving and appliance disconnection also add cost. A free in-home measurement is the only way to price these accurately — photos alone miss subfloor conditions.

Prices are 2025-2026 US national averages and will vary by region, retailer, and contractor. Always get at least 3 quotes before starting your project. This calculator is for estimation purposes only.
